Sugar Land was founded in the mid 1800's as a sugar plantation. Today, the present refinery is located approximately on the spot where the first mill was built. Located in Fort Bend County, they incorporated in 1959. Twenty miles southwest of downtown Houston, Sugar Land is a full-service municipality providing police and fire protection and all other common city services.
It is one of the most affluent and fastest-growing cities in Texas, having grown more than 158% in the last decade. Sugar Land Home Values average $271,000 and the population in 2013 was registered as almost 84,000, 100% urban, 0% rural. The unemployment rate as of December, 2014 was 3.0%.
